Jocelyn Dabney, M.Ed.
Storytelling/Reading

Jocelyn Dabney is a dynamic storyteller, enrapturing actress, and compassionate high school librarian from Youngstown, Ohio. She holds a BS Ed. from Kent State University with a major in speech and drama, along with a minor in educational media. She is a graduate of East Tennessee State University with a Masters degree in Storytelling/Reading. She has presented programs for schools, universities, libraries, festivals, and churches in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Louisiana. Jocelyn also conducts workshops on the art and technique of storytelling.
Her professional affiliations include the National Storytelling Association (NSA), Western reserve Association for the Preservation and Prepetuation of storytelling (WRAPPS), Ohio Order for the Preservation for Storytelling (OOPS), and the Association of Black Storytellers. Jocelyn is the charter member of The Cleveland Association of Black Storytellers (CABS), and is one of the co-founders of Preserving and Sharing Stories and Tales (PSST) of Youngstown.

Jocelyn was chosen by the NSA to be one of the six people representing the six regions of the U.S. She had the honor and privilege of performing at the National Storytelling Festival Exchange in Jonesborough, Tennessee. Jocelyn has also been the featured storyteller for the OELMA (Ohio Educational Library Media Association) state conference. She has presented the closing program for the Virginia Hamilton Conference held at Kent State University, and was a featured teller at the Johnny Appleseed Storytelling Festival held in Western Ohio. Along with those honors, Jocelyn performed as a featured teller at the Greene Spring Storytelling festival in Greeneville, Tennessee.

Jocelyn has appeared at the International Reading Association Annual Convention in New Orleans. Among her many honors, she has published two stories, The Pigg Stories, amd The Tale of the Eagle, in Storytelling World, the storytelling journal published by East Tennessee State University. Jocelyn also has the story of Wangari Maathai published in Children and Science Education Journal.

She played the part of Harriet Tubman on a segment about the Underground Railroad on Channels 45/49 (PBS) production of "Secrets of Sherlock". Jocelyn is also the featured teller/narrator for a program called "Ohio Stories" and for a segment on women in Ohio history for Channels 45/49 (PBS).
Jocelyn and her husband, Robert are active members of Rising Star Baptist Church in Youngstown, Ohio. She directs the church's Easter musical-drama. This production has a cast of over fifty! Jocelyn is the mother of two sons, Sean and Damon who came as a "package deal" when she married Robert in 1985.
